The Canterville Ghost is a popular 1887 novella by Oscar Wilde, widely adapted for the screen and stage. "The Canterville Ghost" is a parody featuring a dramatic spirit named Sir Simon and the United States minister (ambassador) to the Court of St. James's, Hiram B. Otis. Mr. Otis travels to England with his family and moves into a haunted country house. Lord Canterville, the previous owner of the house, warns Mr. Otis that the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville has haunted it ever since he killed his wife, Eleonore, three centuries before. But Mr. Otis dismisses the ghost story as bunk and disregards Lord Canterville's warnings. When the Otises learn that the house is indeed haunted, they succeed in victimizing the ghost and in disregarding age-old British traditions. What emerges is a satire of American materialism, a lampoon of traditional British values, and an amusing twist on the traditional gothic horror tale.

캔터빌의 유령은 1887년 오스카 와일드(Oscar Wilde) 작가의 인기있는 소설로, 영화와 연극으로 널리 소개되었다. "캔터빌 고스트"는 사이먼 경과 전 미국 장관(외교관)인 Mr. 오티스가 등장한다. 오티스는 가족과 함께 영국으로 여행을 가서 유령이 나오는 시골 저택으로 이사를 한다. 이 집의 전 주인인 캔터빌 경은 오티스 씨에게, 사이먼 캔터빌 경의 유령이 3세기 전에 아내 엘레오노어를 죽인 이래로 집에 맴돌고 있다고 경고한다. 그러나 오티스는 유령을 믿지 않는다며 캔터빌 경의 경고를 무시한다. 오티스가 실제 그 집에 유령이 나온다는 것을 알게 되고, 유령을 희생시킨 후 오래된 영국 전통을 무시하는데 성공한다. 미국 유물론(materialism)에 대한 풍자, 전통적인 영국 가치에 대한 풍자, 전통적인 고딕 공포 이야기에 대한 재미있는 반전과 관련한 이야기이다.

The Canterville Ghost is set in England in a large, old house where the Canterville family has lived for 300 years. A ghost has been in the house also. Load Canterville sells his grand old house to an American family. Mr. Hiram B. Otis is happy to buy the house and the ghost because Americas, of course, don't believe in ghost. This extract you will read begins as Mr. Otis and his family arrive to take possession of the house.

"We don't like to live in the house ourselves," Lord Canterville said, "Too many of my family have seen the ghost. My wife's grand mother, the Duchess of Bolton, is one of them. One night, while she was dressing for dinner, two skeleton hands were put on her shoulders. She has been ill for years because of that. And my wife never got any sleep there, because of all the noises at night."

Mr. and Mrs. Otis and their two children move into the house. The housekeeper, Mrs. Umney, warns the family about the ghost. They tell her they do not believe in ghosts, and then everyone goes to bed.

오티스 부부와  두 자녀가 이 집으로 이사를 들어왔다. 가정부인 엄니 부인은 가족들에게 유령에 대해 경고했다. 오티스 가족은 유령을 믿지 않는다고 가정부에게 말하고 모두 잠자리에 들었다.

After the family was in bed and asleep, a strange noise woke Mr. Otis. It sounded like something metal moving slowly along the passage, and it was coming nearer to his bedroom door.

가족들이 침대에 누워 잠이 들었을 때 이상한 소리가 오티스를 깨웠다. 복도를 따라 천천히 금속이 움직이는 듯한 이상한 소리가 들렸고, 소리는 그의 침실 가까운 곳으로 다가오고 있었다.

He got out of bed and listened carefully. The strange noise went on, and he also heard the sound of footsteps. Then he put on his shoes, took a small bottle from his closet, and opened the door of his room.

그는 침대에서 일어나 소리에 귀를 기울였다. 이상한 소리가 계속 들리고 발소리도 들렸다. 그는 신발을 신고 옷장에서 작은 병을 꺼낸 후 방문을 열었다.

There, in the moonlight, was an old man with eyes as red as fire. His gray hair was long and dirty, his clothes were old and full of holes, and there were heavy metal chains around his arms and legs.

달빛이 비치는 그곳에는, 불처럼 새빨간 눈을 가진 노인이 있었다. 노인의 백발은 길고 더러웠고, 낡고 구멍이 가득한 옷을 입고 있었다. 그리고 팔과 다리에는 무거운 금속 사슬을 감고 있었다.

"My dear man," said Mr. Otis, "you really must put some oil on those noisy chains! I've brought you a bottle of Tammany's Sun Oil, which is very good. Everybody in America uses it. I'll leave it here for you, and I'll be happy to give you some more when you need it." He put the bottle down on a small table, then went back inside his room and got into bed.

오티스씨가 말했다. "이보세요, 사슬에 기름을 좀 바르셔야 겠어요. 내가 당신을 위해서 아주 좋은 타마니 태닝 오일 한병을 가져왔어요. 미국 사람들은 모두 이걸 사용한답니다. 당신을 위해 이걸 여기 둘게요. 그리고 당신이 필요하다면 기꺼이 더 가져다 드릴게요." 오티스는 작은 탁자 위에 병을 내려 놓고는 방으로 돌아와 침대에 누웠다.

For a second or two the Canterville ghost stood still. He was so angry! Then he knocked the bottle of oil on to the floor and hurried away. A strange green light came from his body, and he gave a long and terrible cry that rang through the house. But when he got to the top of the stairs, a door opened, two little people appeared, and large pillow went flying past his head!

This was too much for the ghost, so he quickly disappeared through the wall, and soon the house was quiet again.

유령으로서도 참을 수 없는 너무한 일이었기에, 그는 재빨리 벽을 뚫고 사라져 버렸고 집은 이내 다시 조용해졌다.

 

 

When he got to his secret room, the Canterville ghost sat down in the moonlight and tried to think. He was both angry and unhappy. "For three hundred years," he said to himself, "I have been the best and the most famous ghost in the country! Everybody - everybody - has been afraid of me. There was the Duchess of Bolton not long ago. I put my skeleton hands on her shoulders, and she nearly died of terror. She has been ill ever since. Before that, there were three - no, four - housekeepers, who ran away the house, screaming. Then there was that wonderful night in 1752 when Lord Augustus shot himself in the library, because he saw a skeleton in the armchair by the fire. And there was the beautiful Lady Stutfield, who never spoke again after my cold fingers held her long white neck while she sat at dinner."

The ghost sat there, remembering all those happy times in the past. But he was not happy now.
